Despite some technical glitches on the tape, Bill perseveres to feature a new documentary film, pay tribute to his fellow Piqua native, Terri Hemmert, on her Chicago Hall of Fame radio career, and welcome family visiting from Connecticut.
Oh, Canada! Bill cut out early for the Lucette show but still was able to work in a playlist exclusively from north of the border. Bob had his face toward the sun and his toes on the sand, apparently delirious over the end of the rain. Oh, and it was Colonel Tom Parker’s birthday.

Such a night. After paying tribute to Dr. John and Leon Redbone, Bill kicked off the countdown to his 50th Piqua High School reunion on July 20 (also the anniversary of the first moon landing) with three tunes from that tumultuous year.
It was a dark and stormy night with repeated interruptions, I mean warnings, from the National Weather Service. But Bob and Bill, with help from regular listeners Ernie and Ray, managed to play tunes from Big Mama Thornton, Amanda Anne Platt & the Honeycutters, Todd Rundgren and Wayne “The Train” Hancock to help people stay safe and dry.
What’s to be done when the studio equipment conspires against you and messes up the recording of your radio show? You bust out GarageBand, find a few choice tutorials on Youtube, and piece it back together, that’s what. Because of that nimble-fingered editing, you’re be able to enjoy among others Nora Jane Struthers, Hayes Carll, and Karla Bonoff (whose highly anticipated show at the 20th Century exceeded all expectations). As a counterpoint to the show’s inauspicious beginning, we end with Jonatha Brooke’s very excellent cover of Alan Parsons Project’s “Eye in the Sky”.
On the night of our technological breakthrough (a telephone interview with Karla Bonoff), we suffered multiple technical breakdowns at inopportune times. However, we managed to celebrate Bob’s birthday week along with those of our friends Kyle Havens, Barbara Kelley, Barbara Schmidlapp and John Tarvardian.
With Bill at the Nils Lofgren concert, Bob was left to his own devices–and muses. Breaking with tradition, he did not play Neal Black’s “Jesus and Johnny Walker” as is his habit in Bill’s absence. Instead, after a nod to Nils’ work on Springsteen and Neil Young, Bob dug into his roots (rhymes with foots) playing some early seventies Americana and some contemporary Americana. There was also a soul set of Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Al Green and Tony Joe White. Yes, we said Tony Joe White. Apologies to all whose phone calls and texts weren’t answered, but the number was so overwhelming, Bob couldn’t mash all the buttons and respond at the same time.
It’s Nora Jane Struthers week!. She’s the first verified rock star to visit the show, so we kick-off this week’s edition with “Belief”, a single from her most recent release. Also, as our devoted listeners know, Bob really likes birthdays — particularly his own. Leading up to this year’s annual 10 day celebration of it, we tip our hats to today’s birthday buddies: Robert Johnson, Chris France, and Ricky Nelson. See you at the garden party
It was a dark and stormy night Wednesday, but Bob and Bill weathered the turbulence outside from inside the studio. Alas, dear listener, so did the gremlins. They played havoc with the gear, and we ended up with something pretty unlistenable. If the recording had been up to our impossibly high standards, you would have heard us say happy birthday to Rita Coolidge, Little Walter and Judy Collins, who sang Bob’s mother’s favorite song.
