Bob called Bob Dylan’s show at the Aronoff Center last week the third-best he has seen, while Bill plugged the posting of BS&B’s earliest shows on BlueSnakesandBanjos.com. But the highlight was music from Riddy Arman, a Montana ranchhand/singer-songwriter who is coming to the Southgate House Revival Dec. 5.
Bill returned after recovering from routine surgery last month. After recounting the ordeal in excruciating detail, he explained that the best medicine was Rodney Crowell at Memorial Hall. Meanwhile, Bob celebrated the 91st birthday of Mabel John, a former Raelette and the sister of Little Willie John, the King Records artist.
Bob was lonely while Bill was housebound, flat on his back, so Bob crammed the studio with music from the Velvet Underground, Chuck Prophet, Whitney Rose. Lots of tangentially Halloween tunes, too.
Bob paid tribute the late, great Tom Petty, who would have been 71 today if not for his shocking death in 2017. Meanwhile, Bill became intrigued with Alan Parsons while watching a PBS documentary on Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.”
Bob raved about Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real at the Madison Theater while Bill raved about Grayson Jenkins before he even saw him at the Southgate House.
Bob paid tribute to the late Commander Cody (George Frayne) and previewed both the Parker Millsap show at Memorial Hall and Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real at the Madison. Musicologist and friend of the show, Bridgetown Ray, was the winner of our first-ever ticket giveaway (to Parker Millsap) because he knew that the Commander was born in Boise, Idaho. Congrats, Ray!!! If that weren’t enough, Bob also played sets to wish Happy 86th to the Killer, Jerry Lee Lewis, and a belated Happy 63d to Joan Jett.
Bob and Bill paid tribute to the loyal listeners (and financial supporters) from Westwood, Lynn, Cheviot Ray, and Ernie D’Amico, who traveled to Boswell’s in Northside the previous week for a BS&B fundraiser.
Bill previewed the Nowhere Else Festival hosted by Over the Rhine at their Clinton County farm over Labor Day weekend, while Bob paid tribute to Lee (Scratch) Perry, the reggae legend who died this week at 85.
With only a quick nod devoted to the passings of Tom T. Hall and Don Everly necessitated by the loss of all-time great Charlie Watts, Bob devoted the bulk of the show to 21 of the Rolling Stones’ cuts that showcased the elegant, restrained, yet swinging jazz man who anchored the band’s sound since his first gig with them in 1963.
After a week off for the WAIF bored meeting, Bob and Bill returned to the studio to pay tribute to Nanci Griffith, celebrate the birthday of Marvin Isley, Ronnie Dawson and Tony Garnier.
