With the Ohio Valley firmly in the grip of summer’s dog days, the guys bust out music from Rayland Baxter, Neil Young, and the Grateful Dead. That’s only in the show’s first hour.
Bob must still be mourning the official end of his birthday season because tonight he plays music from four artists who share a birthday today: Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Nina Simone, Boz Scaggs, and Ricky Skaggs.
Bob is back from France where he ate 42 different cheeses, drank 24 types of wine, and played with goats. Unfortunately, his return marks the official end of his birthday season. To salve the burn of having to return to the real world, he and Bill play some excellent selections from the Legendary Shack Shakers, Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys, and Reverend Horton Heat to name a few.
Bill flies solo for this week’s show since Bob is on a boat. In France. Meandering down a river. Probably sipping a crisp chardonnay. He’ll regret taking that trip when he hears about Bill’s playlist for tonight which includes songs by Rodney Crowell, Brandi Carlile, Birds of Chicago, and Weezer’s excellent cover of Toto’s “Africa”. C’est la vie, Bob.
There are only a few days before Bob leaves on a French vacation. Before he takes off, he surrenders his playlist of “songs to cruise down a river in France by”. Also, the guys get political and take Roseanne to the woodshed.
With Bob’s 60th birthday only a few days away, we use tonight’s show to celebrate and wish our favorite Gemini a happy birthday. As someone probably once said, “It’s not how old you are. It’s the music you play.” Or something like that. Probably.
Bill has Bruce Springsteen on the brain as he anticipates sitting in the audience for “Springsteen on Broadway”. Bob plays music from two seminal albums released on this date in 1966: The Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds” and Bob Dylan’s “Blonde on Blonde”.
